Dachau
I have had some incredible experiences on this trip, but this one has marked me. I have read heard about and even seen movies about the events and conditions of the Holocaust. All of that iformation seemed somehow so distant or fantastical until this afternoon. One of the most shocking things I learned was that one in three of the victims in Dachau was a Pole. The very real possibility that someone to whom I was directly related suffered in this horrible way totally overwhelmed me to the point of tears repeatedly. Both of my paternal grandparents were from Poland, and my grandmother was also Jewish. I have always maintained that the worst things that happen to people are the things that humans are capable of doing to one another. There are not adequate words to describe the horror.
